Andrew's Unexpected Makeover

Andrew is always keeping us on our toes. After the little cop episode, I thought we’d get a bit of a break… but nope. That is never part of Andrew’s plan!

He told me he and a group of friends were shaving their heads to support his friend—and cousin—who is battling cancer. I was completely on board. “Yes, absolutely, do that!” I said. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t what walked into my room that night.

This kid came home completely bald, wearing a leather jacket and jeans, and for a split second I didn’t even recognize him. The look was… a lot. 😅 We immediately FaceTimed Ben to shock him with Andrew’s new vibe, and his reaction did not disappoint.

Of course, we then had to take pictures and try out different beanies—because it is freezing here, and that shiny head needs protection!

This morning he even went to seminary (yay!), and Heidi sent me a picture of the boys drawing a big blue arrow on his head. Honestly? If you’re going to be bald, you might as well have fun with it.

And thankfully… his hair grows very quickly.

Youth Stake Cereal Drive

I have absolutely loved working with the youth in our stake. These kids are so special and truly unbelievable—I feel lucky to play even a tiny sliver of a role in their youth experience.

This month’s stake activity was a cereal food drive for a local food pantry. The youth decided to make it fun by collecting boxes of cereal and turning it into a competition to see which ward could create the longest domino chain. And wow… they showed up!

We had an amazing turnout, and our ward ended up taking the win! These kids worked so hard for it—they spread the word, got their friends involved, and reminded parents (multiple times!). Their enthusiasm was contagious. - Andrew was even there! Not by his choice - it was his punishment for cop incident #2 - but he was a great sport! (And I think he even secretly enjoyed it and would go again!)

I don’t even know the final count of cereal boxes yet, but we had over 166 youth attend the activity. It was absolutely epic and such a powerful reminder of how incredible this rising generation is. We also had a gratitude wall where the kids would write what they were grateful for as they walked in. I took a picture of a few funny ones - and a few I had to rip up and throw away. Zack and Calvin learned to do the pretzel and Zack danced with Cambrie and learned how to slow dance. Andrew danced with Madsen - all winners in my book!

And the best part? We get to host the trophy in the bishop’s office for the next year! Our youth are very proud of that victory—and honestly, so are we.

Stake YW Training Meeting

I did my first Stake Young Women Training! I had a little 10-minute segment on Creating Belonging, and oh my goodness—it was terrifying. In the car, my talk sounded flawless… but once I stood up there? Not quite the same magic. 😅 I had a few slides to guide me, but public speaking is definitely not my spiritual gift.

At least the rest of the morning was incredible. The breakfast we put on was amazing—truly so well done. And we handed out two beautiful, meaningful prints. One was “Lifted Together” by Kate Lee, reminding us that we’re all in this together—to cheer each other on and help carry one another’s burdens. The other was “The Lost Sheep,” which Kathryn spoke about so tenderly. She invited us to imagine ourselves as the sheep with the Savior always running toward us—and also to picture ourselves behind Him, running with Him to help find the lost sheep. It was absolutely beautiful.

Even though my nerves were high, I loved meeting so many wonderful women from across the stake. And honestly? I’m grateful I have an entire year before I have to get up and speak again!

Andrew and the Police - Take 2

 This kid.

Oh, I love him… but sometimes I also want to strangle him. Yesterday was one of those days.

At 8:15am my phone rings. It’s Andrew’s school. My heart dropped. It’s never good when the school calls right after classes start. It was the assistant principal, Mrs. Almond, informing me that Andrew was in her office—with a police officer—being held for reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and stealing a car. She demanded I come pick up my child.

I’m in total shock, so I ask to speak to Andrew. I hit him with, “WHAT THE HECK?!??!!” and he calmly says, “There’s no good reason.”
…Fantastic. Fabulous. Love that for us.

So I took my sweet time getting dressed and let him sweat for a bit, marinate in his poor choices.

When I arrived, I saw Andrew and two of his friends sitting in the “naughty seats,” waiting for judgment. To his credit, Andrew immediately apologized and gave me the low-down. The very first thing he asked was that I please not bring up “the last incident” (which apparently wasn’t documented, so not on his record). I told him—no promises.

We were taken into the security office to meet with the head of security, the AP, and the police officer. They showed me the “shocking” video evidence: Andrew getting into a friend’s truck, driving it maybe 30 feet (never going more than 4 mph), while his friends hopped in and out of the truck bed and hung off the sides. The whole thing lasted less than two minutes.

Look. Was it smart? No.
Was it the Grand Theft Auto: School Parking Lot they made it sound like? Also no.

Honestly? It wasn’t great, but it also wasn’t even close to what I imagined when the words “reckless endangerment” were used. But the way the school officials talked, you’d think these kids did donuts in the parking lot (well, that did happen last time) and then robbed a bank on the way out (that DIDN'T happen last time). The cop was actually very kind—he said he wasn’t going to ticket Andrew, though he technically could, and a different officer might have escalated it. The AP said something similar: Andrew is a good kid, good grades, hard classes, no priors—so she wasn’t taking disciplinary action—but his home school could still suspend him for 3–5 days if they chose to.

She also had him hand over his keys and arranged for him to take the bus for the foreseeable future. I think this was the worst part for Andrew.

I walked out of there thinking, “Seriously? I got called into the office for this?” But Andrew was respectful and apologetic, so at least there was that. Still—I could not believe he’d be dumb enough to pull this stunt at school of all places, where cameras are everywhere and the parking lot is basically under constant surveillance.

Fast-forward to after school: I had to drive him back to pick up his car so he could get to swim practice. I told him he was grounded from driving… but I was tired. My mood was already not great. I dropped him off, told him I loved him, wished him a great practice, and—for once—drove off without waiting for him to start his car.

Of course, this is the time his car doesn’t start. He calls me 10 seconds later: “My battery’s dead.”

I hadn’t even left the parking lot, so I turned right back around. Neither of us had jumper cables, so we were stuck. (Not that we don't own 10 jumper cables and a battery pack starter - but were those in the cars? NO! Why? ANDREW!) Then he looks at me and says, “Well… I think I can bump-start it.”

Um, what?

I’m irritated, exhausted, and fully convinced this isn’t going to work. But sure. Why not. He tells me to get in the driver’s seat, hold the clutch until he says to release it, and he’ll push the car.

I’m completely doubtful, but do it anyway.

And then—shock of all shocks—it works. The engine fires up, and I just sat there like… what?! I jump out of the running car and give him the biggest hug, completely forgetting how mad and frustrated I was. I’m just standing there, so proud and impressed with this genius of a kid who somehow seems to know how to do everything.

And in that moment, all I could think was how unbelievably lucky I am to be his mom.
He drives me crazy, shocks me daily, and makes me question my sanity… but he also amazes me, teaches me, surprises me, and fills my heart to its absolute brim.

He is chaos and joy and wonder and love, all wrapped in one teenage disaster of a human.

And somehow—somehow—he is mine.

Ben turns 22!

Holy cow — we have a 22-year-old! How is that even possible? It feels like just yesterday I was holding little Ben in my arms, and now here he is, all grown up. I spent the day looking through baby photos and putting together a reel to celebrate him, and oh my goodness — what a flood of memories.

He’s had such a special week, being celebrated by so many people who love him — Josh and Ethan took him out on Sunday, Grandma and Papa on Tuesday, and tonight he’s out with a group of his friends. My heart is just so full knowing how surrounded by love he is.

We can’t wait to celebrate him in person when we’re all together in Nashville for Thanksgiving. Love you so much, Ben — we are so proud of the amazing young man you’ve become. 💙
