Who knew???

This weekend we were able to have family come into town!  Little Lily was getting blessed and Mike and Brittany were sweet enough to do it here in Provo.  I know it had nothing to do with us living here…but it sure made the drive to the blessing nice and short!

IMG_7175

Ahma, Joy, and BOTH my parents also came into town for the blessing!  It was so exciting to have them all here!  So, what do you think the first order of business is?  A trip to the Cal Ranch store of course!  I know, everyone is in shock.  My Dillard's, Nordstrom, Rodeo Drive shopping mother was so excited to go to a Cal Ranch store…complete with her bedazzled sandals…to buy who knows what.

Last time Joy and Ahma visited Mike and Brittany in Idaho they introduced them to the Cal Ranch store in Idaho.  Joy bought a coat and my dad really wanted to get one.  So we shopped and shopped for a coat for my dad.  Trying on the brown one….

  IMG_7180

Discussing the pros and cons of each selection…

IMG_7181

A different brown one this time.  Dad really wanted to wait for Mike to come and see what his thoughts were on the whole jacket thing.  Mike came and the two of them shopped and shopped for just the perfect coat.

IMG_7185

Proof both my parents were here at the same time (they normally have to travel separately so one can be at home to take care of things there)

IMG_7187

The kids quickly found the perfect aisle for them….the toy aisle!  My mom was so excited because everything was 50% off!  She was like a kid in a toy store…wait….

IMG_7188

The final tally….

Joy and Ahma – pretty much something from every aisle in the store, candy, water jugs, grass seeds, gas cans, a crock pot (and yes because of all the shopping they did…they hit up Dillard's next..some of these things I’ll have to take down to them next time we drive to Cali)

All the kids – each got a new toy

Dad – nothing, nada, nil,  zilch!  After all that shopping not one longed for coat.  The irony of it all.

Conversations with Children 2

ANDREW

Andrew still doesn’t get really analytical about his days yet when I talk to him at night. Normally, our conversation consists of series of yes/no questions on my part with Andrew almost universally answering yes regardless of whether he means it. Sometimes he catches himself and gives me the right answer though. He’s finally gotten pretty good at falling asleep in his own bed too. The other night I was talking to him in bed and he goes, “What are you chewing?” “Nothing,” I lied. “Say, AHHHHHH” I quickly hid the gum under tongue and opened my mouth. “Oh, gum!” He quickly exclaimed. I don’t know how, but he had me pegged. Tonight he requested the Davy Crocket theme for his goodnight song. Awesome.

KALLIE

We’re still working on the fact that “favorite” and “least favorite” are completely opposite concepts. She can now count to 100 by tens and wears enough makeup that it’s still on her face by bedtime at night. While I was talking to her tonight Nini called our house and the caller I.D. announced “Joan E. Ericksen”. So we were talking about names and how names can change when you get married and such. Kallie goes “I know who I’m going to marry!” “Who are you going to marry?” I asked. “G-,” she replied. “We’re BEST friends. In fact, it’s SCARY how good friends we are!” I don’t know how this happened but she is head over heals for this kid and she is sure that they are going to get married. Her least favorite part of the day, in fact, was not being in primary for the full 2 hours with G-. This was amended with the fact that she didn’t get to see her Alpine cousins either. What a kid.

BEN

Man, this kid has been a pill today. He threw a fit because we put the kids to bed a little early tonight given the long week we’d just had. He was trying to accuse and taunt me the whole time I was talking with Kallie and Andrew. Finally, when I came to talk to him he thought it would be his turn to unleash on me. But when I started asking about his favorite part of the day and what he learned at church, etc. he shut right up. He was not appreciative of the fact that I refused to engage him. I did get one word out him though. I told him that I loved him and wished him a good night and as I walked out of his room I heard: “DAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!” he he.

Scheduling

This weekend we have the blessed blessing of blameless, beautiful, beneficent baby Lilly. The original plan was to hold this epic, essential, ever-asked-about eventuality at our house. However, that represented a lot of worry-causing, wouldn't-do-it-normally, wily work. So to get out of it we decided to contract and share amongst ourselves a vivacious, violent, voracious virus. That was a good idea.

Of course, Katie still felt obligated to find a place to hold the blessing. So she logged into the scheduling website for the church building and promptly proceeded to request a room in the chapel from 4:30-6:30 pm... for every day for the next year and 2 days.

We were informed by the guy in charge that she did infact manage to crash the entire system when he logged on and tried to process and fix our request. Katie was so embarrassed, she wouldn't even talk to the guy on the phone.

The down side of cousin sleepovers

We switched kids back on Saturday and Sunday morning Kal woke up with a cough.  I didn’t think much of it.  Chris and I debated on whether we should let her go to church or not.  By 1pm she was playing around with Ben and Andrew so off to church we went.  On the way to Grandma and Papa’s house for dinner Kal fell asleep (not super surprising since Kal and Hailey are little night owls and stayed up till 11ish…sorry Emily).  She just seemed a little punky when she woke up.  Not sick, but not running around crazy like she normally is.  And then it began…

This is how Kallie was for the next 2 days.  On the couch with little Ahba bear watching movies.  (Little Ahba bear is a stuffed animal she got from my grandfather who passed away last year.  She is always carrying it around and it gives her comfort).  She had high fevers (highest was 104.6!), nasty chest cough – the kind where to cough so hard you vomit, and just no energy and no appetite.  Tuesday night I was watching her breathe as she slept and noticed she was breathing very shallow and very rapid.  It really scared me.  The next morning (Wednesday) I called her doctor to see if I should bring her in.  They said any compromise in breathing needs to be seen.  Kallie, Andrew, Ahba bear, and I headed out the door to the doctors.  When we got there she coughed so hard she vomited.  You think that would get us back to a room right?  NOPE!  40 minutes later we are still in a crowed waiting room.  I felt really bad for the staff.  They were so slammed by sick kids and impatient parents so I tried really hard not to be one.  They just didn’t have enough rooms to put kids in and the ones in the rooms were so sick they took a long time!

We finally got called back and after a long wait in the waiting room I was anticipating a longer wait in the room for the doctor.  As the nurse was taking Kal’s temp (103.7), heart rate, and oxygen she went and got a new finger thing (the thing they put on your finger to get your heart rate and oxygen) because she said it was reading off.  She puts it on again and still the reading is everywhere from 40 –75.  She leaves and says the dr. will be right in…and she wasn’t kidding.  The dr comes right in and starts asking me 101 questions while looking Kallie over.  She says she throat looks horrible, she is dehydrated, and her lungs sound horrible.  She lets me know we need to go to the hospital to get a chest x-ray done, but before we can do anything we need to get Kal a breathing treatment to try and get her more air.  After the breathing treatment her oxygen is still only 85.  They tell us to go right to the hospital, get the x-ray, come right back and by then the meds in the breathing treatment should have kicked in.  So the four of us Kallie, Andrew, Ahba bear, and I go to get the chest x-ray.

The chest x-ray comes back showing pneumonia and croup.  Lovely.  We get back to the office and have to wait again for a room.  I was getting really tired by this point because Kallie was so sick and needed to be carried, but I also had Andrew who decided to be super crazy that day (actually he was really good for a 2 year old being stuck in a dr’s office and hospital for 5 hours….I think I was just a little overwhelmed with everything going on…I didn’t have any snacks for him or games, and the fact that he liked to run out of the office door and try to get the elevator alone…he only made it once).  We go and get her oxygen checked again and it is still only at 87.  Her fever has gone up to 104 again, her strep test came back positive and she is white as a ghost and just lethargic.  I’m getting really worried.  The dr is getting really worried.  She goes and gets another dr to ask what he thinks.  The take her oxygen again and it is only at 87 still.  The drs come in and tell us they need to admit her to the hospital because she can’t keep her oxygen levels up…and the fever and dehydration isn’t helping either.   When she falls asleep they oxygen rate will go down even more and that is what they are really afraid of.  They want her on a monitor while she sleeps.  She is ok while she is awake.  They have a shot they can give her that they think will help, but they don’t know.  They go back and forth and ask what I want to do.  I ask them if it would be ok to give her the shot and then I could bring her back in a few hours and if she still can’t get her oxygen above 90 we can check her in.  That sounds good to them since they are both the ones working the urgent care clinic that night.  We finally head home 5 hours later.

At home we push more fluids and put damp clothes on her head.  She actually starts to be looking a little better, but I’m not sure.  We call our home teacher to come and help Chris give her a blessing then take her back to the doctors office.  They check her oxygen again and it is 89.  Dang.  They told us it had to be at 90 to keep her out of the hospital.  The check her temp, only 101.  They check her oxygen again at it is at 90!  I was so excited.  Her doctor tells me I can take her home, but I have to check on her every hour throughout the whole night.  If I see any problems I need to bring her in.  I promise and we head home.

We check on Kal every hour all night long and she does ok.  At one point she was breathing really shallow so Chris woke her up and made her take the inhaler he has for asthma.  She was ticked at him for waking her up.  That’s how we knew she was feeling a little better.  By Saturday her fever had broke and she was feeling so much better, but still coughing and still tired.  Today she is feeling good enough to fight with Andrew so we are on the mend!

Andrew – now that’s another story.  While we were in the doctors office they gave Kal some juice boxes to try and get her to drink.  She takes only a few sips then is done with them.  Juice boxes are Andrew favorite thing.  He can’t stop trying to get to this juice box and get a drink from it.  I do a good job at keeping it high and out of his little hands, but when the doctor comes in to talk to me I lose focus and he gets the prized juice box.  He drinks all of it.  I knew we were in for it.  Sure enough Andrew is our sick one now.  He has a fever and nasty cough, but thankfully his strep test came back negative.  He is feeling better but at night he just wakes up crying from coughing.

Hailey also got sick, but with the flu.  The poor little girl just feels awful!  So these cute three kids who played so nicely together for their sleepover also got all sick together. What sharers they are!   Ben on the other hand is perfectly healthy!

Thank you to our all friends and family for all the love and prayers.  One of my activity day girls came up to me in church today to tell me she was fasting for Kal.  It just brought me to tears!  The primary presidency brought over some fun things to keep her entertained while she laid in bed which she has played with for hours.  Movies are only fun for so long.  Hopefully this week we will get back to full health in time for all our family coming to visit and Ana coming home!

Cousin Sleepover

Friday after school Grandma and Papa picked the kids up from school and took them on a little Grandkids/grandparent date with all the cousins. They went to Pirate Island and had a blast. We had invited Hailey to stay over at our house Friday night for a little sleepover. Ben worked hard on Grandma and finally got an invite for a sleepover at their house (I think he and Lisa were in cohots). It was fantastic! I never saw the girls or Andrew! I felt like I even got the night off! They played dress-up, dolls, dancer, models, put on make-up, we made cookies, took a walk to the park and just had a great time. Aren’t they cute little girls?

IMG_7076

I guess I should have been paying more attention to what they were doing. Andrew came downstairs dressed like this…

Sometimes it’s really hard being the younger brother :) He is modeling his make-up....

Andrew wore the little dance outfit the rest of the night. Hey, at least they weren’t fighting!

My poor car

While we were at the cabin for Christmas/New Years the valley got some pretty nice snow…and freezing temps that didn’t let that snow melt.  We hadn’t been able to clean off the driveway because it was pure ice.  A literal skating rink.

One night Chris had to go back to the lab to check on some things and he took the van like he normally does.  I was up in bed reading when he walked in.  He looked so serious and sad and said “I just ruined your car”.  I thought he was just being his normal self and kidding with me since we had just talked about how slick the driveway was.  I didn’t find it very funny and just asked him how work was.  He said, “No, I’m serious.  I just got in an accident in the van”.  I was really worried since he had been driving and Andrew had been with him.  After finding out everyone was ok and the accident occurred going under 3 mph, in our driveway I was pretty sure it was just a little dent and he was being dramatic (which is normally my role).  I told him it was fine and we could just get it fixed.

Want to know how much damage can occur going 3 mph?  Here you go!

Yep, the drivers door couldn’t even open all the way.  I was so sad!  This van is my baby!  After seeing the van I was really worried about what the suburban looked like.  I ran outside and this is what I saw…

IMG_7148

See the obvious spot where it got hit?  I didn’t either.  I had to go inside and ask Chris.  He said he hit the passager side where the back tire and backdoor meet.  See it now?  I couldn’t either…here is a close up…

IMG_7149

Yep, that’s it.  That little scrape.  Can you call that even a dent?  This suburban is a tank!  When I took the van in for an estimate the guy at the shop told me Chris had hit the “sweet spot” in the van.  Which means that part of the car is not reinforced for an accident.  And of course that is where we hit it!  When I was finally able to clear the ice off the driveway I found paint chips, broken pieces of my lights, random things I had no idea were even on my car.  I have to admit I felt so sad picking them up and tossing them out.

So for a little while I got to drive “the new car” as Andrew calls it.

IMG_7152

Oh, another funny little story to go along with our car mishap.  When I took it in to get an estimate Andrew kept telling the poor guy that our car was broken and that Daddy did it.  “Dad broke our car”, “our car broken….Daddy did it”.  You could tell this poor guy had no idea what to say to this little man who was tattling on his own father!

While Andrew and I went to drop off the van and get a rental, Kallie and Chris stayed home because Kal was sick and not in school.  Apparently the phone rang while Chris was getting dressed so Kallie decided she should answer it.  It was a person from her school looking for me or Chris.  Kallie told this woman (who she doesn’t know) that Chris was in the bathroom and that I was buying a new car because her dad ruined our old one.  Kallie never told her dad anyone called.  The lady called the next day and related this story to me.  She said I would be shocked at the things she learns from little kids about there families.  I guess so!

The van has been fixed and it looks amazing.  It’s amazing how fast car parts add up!  I just grateful for insurance so we didn’t have to pay for all of our $3,000.00 plus repair!
