Cheddar Gorge - Cheddar, Somerset

Cheddar Gorge is only about a hour and a half from our house in Salisbury, but considering the kids were on half term break we decided to make a trip of it and do another Airbnb.  Cheddar Gorge is a limescale gorge located in the village of Cheddar.  It is a big tourist destination and is the home of the Cheddar show caves that they light with colored light and where Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man (estimated to be 9,000 years old) was found in 1903.  In 2005 it was voted Britain's #2 greatest natural wonder.

This is the first cave where the man was found and where they age the cheese.  We saw a little tour where they turned off the lights and it was pitch black.  It is home to lots of bats and other critters - so you really want the lights always on!

Some cheese being aged in the caves.

Then we headed down the road and went to the more touristy cave they named the Dreamhunters.  They put colors lights in and fake animals and music.  I wasn't super impressed.  The real caves were much more impressive.

Jacob's ladder is the name of a 274 step walkway up a hill in Cheddar Gorge.  There is an amazing lookout tower that you can see the whole village of Cheddar.  There is also tons of different hikes you can take.  We walked a bit until Nick crashed then decided rain was coming so we headed back down.

With the name of Cheddar, of course they have to make Cheddar cheese....so of course we had to go and buy some because we are those people.  They still make the cheese using milk from the oldest dairy in cheddar and still age their cheese for months inside the cheddar caves.  On our way out of town we drove up the gorge a bit and marveled at the size of the cliffs.  There were people scaling up the sides - yeah, we aren't those people...
